Customizing an existing Master page

Zones: WebApplications, FrontPage-Expressions, Programming for ASP.NET

HI,

I've just started working on share point 2007, I'm using share point designer 2007 for customization Team template. I'm an experienced PHP developer with okay types level of Microsoft technologies like ASP .Net and C#. I've just landed (or crashed) in a situation where I've very less time and some client has setup the site and given the access to us. We have to customize the layout of the Master page and update the .css file.

I've two very specific questions,

1. how do I upload images to the
http://someIPAddress:somePortNumber/_layouts/images/
folder, I can not see it in the designer, but the header image comes from here only, If I've to replace this how will access this _layout?

2. I could not find reference to the core.css anywhere in the master page, where it is coming from?

The other help I'm looking for is a good and free tutorial for the customization of the existing layouts
