The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Frontpage repeatedly asks for a password when I try to publish my website

Tags: Microsoft, Frontpage, 2003, Running on XP SP2, publishing to IIS 6.0 on Windows Server 2003
I am using Frontpage 2003 (running on Windows XP SP2) to publish an internal company website.  The website runs on IIS 6 on Windows Server 2003.  In the past, when I published the website, I was prompted for an ID and password, and entering my domain ID and password would allow me to publish.  Now, Frontpage refuses to accept my logon credentials, and just repeatedly asks for them.  So far, this is what I have tried:
1.  I checked the Stored Usernames and Passwords on my local machine to make sure that it wasn't in there.  It wasn't.
2.  I followed the steps in Microsoft KB article 296645 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296645/en-us); that didn't help.
3.  I tried opening the production version of the website directly with Frontpage.  If I try to open it using the URL, I have the same problem as above.  I can open it by browsing to the file location, but when I try to publish that way, I get an error that says "The folder is contained by a server-based website.  To access this site, you must use the http:// url for the Web server."
4.  I thought the problem might have been caused by the last round of Microsoft Updates on the web server, so I uninstalled all of the February updates.  This also did not fix the problem.
5.  I had someone else try to access the site via frontpage from another machine.   They had the same problem.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The error message indicates you have a web server set up. Use HTTP to
publish to it first. (Put http://computername/ in the "Publish TO" URL in
FrontPage when you publish.)

02.27.2008 at 02:58AM PST, ID: 20992975
That's the part that's NOT working.  I normally publish using the http: method - I only tried using the method in #3 above because I can't get the http method to work any more.

have you recaluted the extensions..... added a user in there might help

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you are saying.  Can you be more specific?

Sorry the Frontpage extensions to allow publishing: have you recalcuated these, are they installed?

in web admin for extensions you can add users, for gorups..... any users

should be something like
http://yourservername/_vti_bin/_vti_adm/fpadmdll.dll?page=webadmin.htm

02.27.2008 at 05:48AM PST, ID: 20993875
When I try to get to the web admin, I have the same problem as I do when I try to publish.  The site asks me repeatedly for an ID and password, and I can't get past that.

mmm: do you have the full administrator username and password try that?

or reinstall extensions:

I got it working; I finally decided that it must be a corrupt file of some kind. so I restored from backup all of the non-content files (since I wasn't sure where the problem was), and now it works fine.

what did you restore?

02.27.2008 at 06:17AM PST, ID: 20994082
I restored all of the files under wwwroot that weren't content that I had created - mainly files in _vti_pvt.
