The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

cascading style sheet issues when domain forwarding

I have two www.domains names.    For this post:  Example1.com and Example2.com.     www.Example1.com is the main website for the company.    www.Example2.com is just a domain name that forwards traffic to Example1.com.

The website is being set up with FrontPage 2003 using a dynamic web template and a cascading style sheet.    The style sheet is pretty much just one embedded font.

When I view the site by going to www.example1.com, the website loads properly, accessing the css and displays my embedded font.
When I view the same site by going to www.example2.com, twhich just forwards to www.example1.com, the website does not load properly, almost as if the css is not found.      No error messages are generated.  My one embedded font just doesn't display correctly.

Any ideas?

If you are infact redirecting correctly it should work. Try specifying the full path:
href="http://www.example1.com/dtw.css">

Hielo:

Good idea.   Unfortunately, the full path your suggested, did not work.    That was my first guess too.   Can you elaborate on "redirecting correctly"      Until this CSS issue, the redirecting was working perfectly.   Right now it works except the CSS.   I just I'm not sure how this could happen.     Can a CSS be applied/or not on a redirect?

02.17.2008 at 01:00PM PST, ID: 20915647
>>Can you elaborate on "redirecting correctly"
You said "www.Example2.com is just a domain name that forwards traffic to Example1.com"
My guess is you meant "redirect" instead of "forward".  So if Example2.com is redirecting the user to Example1.com/test and dtw.css is in Example1.com/dtw.css, then the browser will not find it. Conversly, if you are redirecting the user to Exmpl1.com but your css is located at Exampl1.com/Styles/dtw.css, the browser will once again not find it.

What you need to do is open the page where the CSS is NOT loading, view the html source code, figure out what is the path to the css that the broswer sees. Then copy the path of the css and paste it onto another browser window and see if it loads.

Assuming you specified the correct path to the CSS, another possibility is that the dwt.css file contains @import statments which may not be pointing to the right path.

I don't see any problem.
Here are the actual domains.     Maybe you will see it.

www.discounttechnologyworkforce.com   <-The working site
www.godtw.com <- The site that redirects to www.discounttechnologyworkforce.com

My hosting provider, which controls the redirect just sent me an e-mail saying they don't know why this is happening either.    It must be somewhere in my code.

02.17.2008 at 05:57PM PST, ID: 20917030
You need to clear you browser's cache Gary. I don't see any difference between the two domains. I got the identical css file for both domains. I tested it in IE 6 and FF. So, as far as the public goes, that site is ok.

02.17.2008 at 07:24PM PST, ID: 20917363
Huh.   Cleared my cache and still the same problem.     Are you seeing a Handwriting looking font on both pages?

02.17.2008 at 07:28PM PST, ID: 20917381
I get the same result on multiple computers on our LAN.

02.17.2008 at 07:49PM PST, ID: 20917450
>> Are you seeing a Handwriting looking font on both pages?
Only through IE and only on one domain. I am attaching the headers so you see what the browser sees. Everything seems to be in order.
Try updating your css to this:
<STYLE TYPE="text/css">

I don't know what's going on in your server. I still see:

Which basically says that the css file has not been modified since Feb 18, but I do see the changes your made to the css after downloading the css.

Update your html to this and see what happens:
<META HTTP-EQUIV="expires" CONTENT="0">
<!-- Or a date in the past
<META HTTP-EQUIV="expires" CONTENT="Wed, 26 Feb 1997 08:21:57 GMT">  -->

I tried changing it to the other domain to see if I could break the working domain.   To my surprise, the working domain kept working.      Now I am really confused.    I changed it back to a relative link.

I am thinking about abandoning the embedded fonts via the Microsoft tools.     Even if I solve this problem, I need to fix it for Mozilla as well.      I am considering this approach.

Mozilla will not honor  those font statements (plus they are extremely difficult to read - in my opinion).

Your altenative seems reasonable. The flash plugin is installed on most browsers and the vast majority of people also have javascript enabled.
