I just built a new home PC about a month ago.
Specs
ASUS P5Q-E
Intel Q6600 Quad-Core 2.4
2 x 2 GB Mushkin DDR2 1066
Visiontek Radeon HD 4850 512 MB
Antec TruePower 480W PSU
300GB PATA and 750GB SATA HDDs
Windows XP SP3
Catalyst Drivers v8.8
From what I can tell, the system runs 100% perfect in every application and game other than Battlefield 2. The framerate in BF2 would drop down to 1 or 2 a second after playing for anywhere between 5-20 minutes. The video card temperatures were within what I found to be normal after some googling, but I thought it must be a video card issue so I returned it and got a new one. Still have the same issue with the new video card.
Other games such as Half-Life 2 run perfectly fine for as long as I care to play them. I'm running the latest version of BF2, and have tried Catalyst driver version 8.6, 8.7 and 8.8. BF2 ran fine on my old computer, but cpu/ram/video/motherboard have changed since then.
I'm not sure how to best proceed. I'm assuming it must be cpu/motherboard/ram related, but I'd rather not just start RMA'ing things at random because they'll send me refurbished replacement parts, and I don't want to have a PC full of refurb parts.
I'd like to know if there's some kind of a diagnostic utility I could run that will help me track down the issue. Also, despite the temp readings from the ATI Catalyst utility reporting normal video card temps, the card is very hot to the touch...almost too hot to touch. Is that normal? My ambient temp is about 75F and I have good ventilation in the case.
