Configure IE6 SP1 under Win98SE on LAN broadband

IE6 SP1 does not find internet. Error message says Cannot Find Server - Microsft Internet Explorer. Win98 box is plugged directly into a Linksys router. Router also provides LAN with Win2K and WinXP boxes. Win98 box fully integrated into LAN. Win2k box running ZoneAlarmPro. WinXP box has no firewall. I think. Win98 box has no firewall at the moment. I want to get on the net first, if possible.

Earlier network problem resolved when all Network Connection Wizard files normalized to the same version number. See previous question.

Downloaded full IE6 SP1 (http://downloads.planetmirror.com/pub/microsoft/ie/6.0sp1/ie60sp1.exe) on Win2KPro machine then the Win98 box copied it through the LAN. Instead of uninstalling previous IE6 install (thinking the problem was mixed version files as in previous problem), I re-installed over earlier installation of IE6 SP1. This was sort of my only option because IE6 seems virtually uninstallable.

IE (through its internal wizard) set to LAN, Autodetect and Autoscript ("explorer"). No problems in Device Manageror any network wizard.

Played with Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) even though it should be inappropriate. ICS reported that a highspeed connection had to be installed before it could work. I assume this is because it is inappropriate to a Router born LAN.

Suggetions?

Also you could try a repair of IE6 from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Well, Caza13,
Bottom Line: did not work.

Interesting idea to use the Lavasoft Fix considering my earlier (Q_21128119.html) process just to get the LAN visible on the Win98SE box. I ran LSPfix. It immediately showed two protocol handlers for removal from the Registry, IMSLSP.DLL & VETREDIR.DLL. I executed. Ran IE and...problem persists.

So, I restored the Registry and am back to where I started.

Before I posted this question, I "repaired" IE6 several times. It was at that time that I discovered there is no removal of IE6, only repairs and adds!

BTW, the reason I originally mentioned ZoneAlarm is because once during the weeklong cleanup of the Win98SE box, installing ZA seemed to --- anomalously? --- open the Win98SE box to the LAN. I do not know why that happened and since then, Win98SE has been re-installed several times. Indeed, I just desperately re-insalled ZA during which it opens IE. Failure.

This question is still open. Considering the router is working (LAN), I really suspect the solution must be simple. But obscure? Maybe this is a higher point question.

Double check your TCP/IP configuration. You may be using another protocol like NETBEUI or SPX/IPX protocol to connect to the LAN, but the internet requires the TCP/IP protocol.

Another thing to try. Open the Run window from the Start menu and enter: command . Then select OK. At the command prompt enter: C:\Windows\>ping 64.156.132.140 and see what response you get. If success is indicated it means that you are connected to the internet. At the C:\Windows\> prompt enter: exit to quit the command prompt.

Problem Cause: Running Lavasoft Adaware can disable MS Winsock2 on Win98 and later.

Solution: ADAWARE WINSOCK FIX for Win98\WinME:

It turns out to be, to me, obscure AND difficult.

Here is the repair of winsock and TCP/IP stack for adaware disconnect on Windows ME system.

Open Network settings
1.) Remove all protocols except the Network Interface card.
2.) Click Apply & Close the Properties box, but on reboot notice, hit Cancel. Do not reboot!
3.) Open Regedit and delete these keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Dhcp
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Dhcpoptions
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\MSTCP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VXD\Winsock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2

Close Registry Editor.

4.) Open Network Properties again, and Click ADD - PROTOCOL - Microsoft/TCPIP (should Add
Client for MS Networks Automatically)

Have your windows CD ready or the CAB files,
Reboot and you should be good.

So it turned out to be a Winsock problem after all. The LSP-fix is supposed to automate the recovery procedure. I'm not sure why it didn't work for you. I've seen it work for others. I'm glad that you managed to find the manual procedure in another question.

Its download page (http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm) indicates that the "LSP" in LSPfix.exe stands for "Layered Service Provider" and not "Lavasoft" as I imply in an earlier response to Caza13's suggested solution.
