Apple Remote Desktop 3 - Which VNC Should I Use to Control Windows Machines?

Tags: remote, apple, desktop, windows, vnc
I'm using Apple Remote Desktop (ARD) 3 to control my Mac Network.

I also have a SBS 2003 Server and several XP clients.

Which VNC software should I use on my Windows Machines to allow them to be controlled by ARD 3?

The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

if anyone is still registered to this thread... i did all the above but my ARD only shows that my window machine exists... when i try to observe or control it... the authentication screen will appear for a fraction of a second and will disappear leaving nothing after it. the machine shows as "offline"  and i don't have firewall... anyone familiar with this issue

Roise R,

You may need to clear the program log files on the windows machine, or at least get them to clear automatically. Go to My Computer, right click, go to Manage, click, go to System tools, then event viewer, then application. Right click, go to properties, and then select "overwrite as needed".

I used 2 apps for connecting to my windows networks at the office and out on the road, these are Microsoft RDC client for mac (which surprisingly works very well) and Chicken of the VNC which again works well and is of course FOC.

You should, if you have multiple OS's on the network look at Parellels which is just excellent and allows you to run multiple systems and networks at the same time (just like VM Ware). If you run this you will have no probs at all whether its linux, windows whatever.

Hope this helps all.
