Recording TV shows on PC without a Tivo

Hi, I live in the Philippines and there's no such thing as TiVo here, so I was wondering, could I do similar digital video recording using a pc, special software and videocard? I'd like to be able to save tv shows to my harddrive. Is there any other software besides Microsoft Windows XP Media Center that can do this? I heard they use proprietary formats so the video files can't be shared.

SUre, get a tv card (check out either the all in wonder card (ATI) or hauppauge)
http://www.hauppauge.com/

listening... in fact, i want to do same and even more. i even want two or more tv channels can be recorded or watched at same time.

hi Steve, i am here again. :)
I use the ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 8500DV.  They have an even faster one out, now.  Works great.

Don't know if it can do 2 channels at once.  Check the ATI website.
hi ShineOn, what's the resolution of tv program it recorded? which kind of system it supports, pal + ntsc? whats the file size for 1-hour video?
It will do NTSC or PAL.  The resolution depends on what you set it to.  It defaults to its own "vcr" file format but you can capture to MPEG if you wish.  It can use a couple of gig of disk if you set the res high enough for DVD-quality.
hi ShineOn, thanks for your information. i will post a dedicate question later on this issue, to seek for a total solution, including hardware (motherboard, processor, memory, display adapter, capture card and disply adapters) and software etc.

Also, the software for the tv tuner and video capture comes with it... along with "lite" versions of some DVD authoring software.

So, I hope I have answered your question sufficiently, chashiineriiya.
I've been capturing video with an ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Pro on a P4 512 MB, with ATA 133 7200 rpm H.D and the quality is amazing (audio and video).
You need a TV tuner card, but if you can afford,  the ATI All-in-Wonder go for it.

I've actually been thinking of the ATI All In Wonder 9600 Pro (the tv tuner is onboard as well)...
but I'll see about prices of the ones you guys have recommended
