The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

I am getting this error message on 2 computers (VMs to be precise, but I don't think this is significant).
I get this on my development VM at home.  I get this on the web server VM at the office.
However, at work, the development VM works fine.  And, the web server VM works fine at my home office.  The behavior is coincidentally opposite.  Additionally, I have another physical development PC and server at another office and I never get this error.  I have Googled this out but cannot find much on it.

They are all Windows XP SP2 or W2k3 Standard Ed. SP2.

I included a code snippet.  I have put 3 asterisks where the trace goes bad on the computers where it fails.  When you explore the AD DirectoryEntry object most of the fields will be filled with the error message that "...AD is not installed..."

Has anyone seen this?

After I posted the question, I tried something else.  I was running my Test app on the VM Web server while I was in that test domain using the VIC client and launching a console.  So there I am opening a browser on the web server by typing in "http://localhost/test" and the app runs, but I get the error.  Thus, I opened a browser on my physical desktop computer and called the VM Web server http://gboweb01/test/ and the app works fine.  The test domain does not have any site/domain relationship in AD.  I have to authenticate to the VM in the test environment to see the web page.  (...just some more details for you all...)
Thanks.
William

This is the high-level code:
    Private Function UserOrUserList() As Boolean
        Dim dt As DataTable
        Dim oAD As AD_Lib.ADF
        Dim bRetVal As Boolean = False
        Dim oSearch As SearchResultCollection

        oAD = New AD_Lib.ADF()

        If txtParms.Text = "" Then
            oSearch = oAD.DomainUsers  ***

            If oSearch Is Nothing Then
                lblDisplay.Text = oAD.Warning
            Else
                For Each Result As SearchResult In oSearch
                    Dim ent As DirectoryEntry = Result.GetDirectoryEntry()

                    ' Trim off the leading "CN="
                    ddList.Items.Add(ent.Name.Substring(3))
                    ent.Dispose()
                Next
                lblDisplay.Text = "Users loaded."
            End If
        Else
            If oAD.UserLogonExists(txtParms.Text) Then
                dt = oAD.GetUserDataTable(txtParms.Text)
                lblDisplay.Text = "You found user: " & dt.Rows(0)(0).ToString() & " : " & dt.Rows(0)(1).ToString() & " " & dt.Rows(0)(3).ToString() & " - "
                bRetVal = True
            Else
                lblDisplay.Text = "You got nothin' Beotch..."
            End If

        End If

        If ddList.Items.Count > 0 Then
            bRetVal = True
        End If

        Return (bRetVal)
    End Function

This is the DomainUsers call from the above code where the error occurs:
    Public Function DomainUsers() As SearchResultCollection
        Dim oDE As DirectoryEntry
        Dim oSearch As DirectorySearcher
        Dim oResults As SearchResultCollection

        Try
            oDE = GetDirectoryObject()  ***
            oSearch = New DirectorySearcher(oDE)

            oSearch.Filter = "(objectClass=User)"
            oSearch.SearchScope = SearchScope.Subtree
            oResults = oSearch.FindAll()

        Catch ex As Exception
            Me.Severity = 3
            Me.m_sbWarningMsg.Append(ex.Message)
            Return (Nothing)
        End Try

        Return (oResults)
    End Function

    Public Function GetDirectoryObject() As DirectoryEntry
        Dim oDE As DirectoryEntry

        Try
            oDE = New DirectoryEntry(Me.ADPath, Me.ADUser, Me.ADPassword, AuthenticationTypes.Secure)  ***

        Catch ex As Exception
            Me.Severity = 3
            Me.m_sbWarningMsg.Append(ex.Message)
            Return (Nothing)
        End Try

        Return (oDE)
    End Function
