Xcode can't deploy new ap to connected iPhone for testing

Hello all,

I just downloaded the iPhone SDK and have developed a simple Hello World app to test things out.  It works fine in the simulator but when I try to deploy it to an iPhone I have connected (after linking it up from Organizer) I get this error:

"Your mobile device has encountered an unexpected error (0xE8000001) during the install phase: Verifying application"

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?  From reading on the net it seems like I may need to have some sort of certificate installed but I have no idea what this means.  I have not yet purchased either of the developer plans so that may have something to do with it (I thought the SDK was free to mess around with on your own but you wouldn't have access to the deploy to the App store unless you paid...maybe you can't deploy like this either).  I am a total noob to Mac programming and iPhones so please forgive me. Thanks.
