The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Recently I bought a new Maxtor drive. It worked well. I loaded on my accounting software. But then I noticed that one of the drive/volume users who had read access was "unknown". This bothered me, but I have since found out what this is all about and ways to kick this user via the sharing utility.

Anyway, I am familiar with working at the unix/linux command line, so I used Terminal in an attempt to re-chown the volume to the basic user id of the system, but as soon as I did, the volume vanished, both from the desktop and from shell. The drive activity light also went out.

I contacted Maxtor support, and they really did not understand what had happened. They suggested only to try it via the USB connection. This of course did not work. Of course I have rebooted, etc. etc. etc. tried to get the computer to recognize the drive several different ways, but no-go. For example the disk utility does not see the drive in any way shape or form, and there is no hint of the drive volume being present via shell, even though it is connected and plugged in.

I figure there has just got to be a utility that will re-init the drive, but where?

I don't want to try returning the drive, because it has all my accounting data on it. So am I stuck? Or is there a way to re-init the volume somehow?
