Strange Gigabit Network Behavior

This is a weird one!

We have several new 24" iMac's that we are rolling out.  Users began complaining of extremely slow network access even though they had gigabit connections.  We have been able to reproduce the issues moving the machines to different switches and ports, with 2 exceptions.  First, if they are plugged into a Cisco switch they operate as expected (all other switches are 3Com 4200G).

Second, and this is where it gets weird...If I start a packet capture session using Packet Peeper (Open Source OSX packet capture utility) the machine performs at the expected gigabit speeds.  Turn Packet Peeper off and it is slow again! This works 100% of the time.

Anyone have any ideas why running a packet sniffing application would cause the systems NIC to work correctly?Start Free Trial
